Lather, Rinse, Repeat: Fertility-Friendly Body Products

Written by Emily    Thursday, 17 September 2009 00:00    PDF Print E-mail
If you're anything like me, then using as many all-natural body products as possible is important. I could stand in the bodycare aisle of a store for a good 30 minutes reading ingredients to make sure there are no crazy chemicals in my lotions, shampoos, face creams, etc. that could lead to fertility problems down the line.

Chemicals like phthalates (used to make creams creamier and to hold scent) and parabens (a preservative) can affect estrogen levels in the body. While this certainly isn't breaking news, it's always good to be reminded to be vigilant about what you put on your skin ... especially if you are concerned about potential fertility-threatening ingredients.

One of the perks about working at Conceive is getting the latest scoop on lots of new natural products. As they come in, we will be sure to share them with you, too!

I recently learned of Nine Naturals, a fairly new company that specializes in natural products for pregnant women. But I figure their Oh Baby shampoo and conditioner is just as perfect for any woman who is trying to get pregnant and wants to avoid harmful chemicals. The recently launched haircare items include the certified vegan Minty Moisturizing shampoo and a seperate conditioner: both free from parabens, sulfates, phthalates, and DEA (aka diethanolamine, a chemical that provides a rich lather in shampoos). Instead, each contains nine essential ingredients. For example, in the shampoo, you get:
1. olive oil
2. corn sugar
3. coconut oil
4. citrus fruit
5. sodium salt
6. peppermint oil
7. pro-vitamin B5
8. wheat proteins
9. natural preservatives

Plus they smell wonderfully refreshing. The conditioner contains rosemary oil, which gives it a nice herbal scent. It looks like they have a bodywash in the works, too. The haircare items go for $18 each, and can be purchased online at NineNaturals.com.

There's also a new skincare line called Garden of Eve, which is completely organic, hand-blended, and not tested on animals. The line has products for various skin types, including one called Expectantly Lovely, all of which are safe for future moms. There's the Expectanly Lovely Facial Toner, Face Cream, and Eve's Mud Party face mask. But there are many other products in the line to choose from, including unscented for those who are sensitive to strong perfumes and synthetic frangrances.

The Garden of Eve products don't come cheap (they range from $39 to $209), but if you're looking for quality skincare minus the unhealthy chemicals then you might want to give it a try. Purchase at gardenofeveskincare.com.
