Trying IVF Again

Q. How long are you supposed to wait after a failed IVF cycle before trying again?

A. Medically, you can usually start up again immediately. Fertility clinics differ a bit in their preferences, but in our practice we like to perform a blood test and an ultrasound of the ovaries, to see if the ovaries are ready to be stimulated by fertility medications again. We like to check that there are no active follicles or leftover egg sacs growing as a result of the ovarian stimulation drugs. If there are a number of large leftover egg sacs, called cysts, we’ll usually advise the patient to rest the ovaries and not stimulate them that month, and to return with the next menstrual cycle.
