9. It’s risky to adopt because things often go wrong during the adoption process.
We’ve all read about adoptions gone awry. A birth mother changes her mind, or a foreign country’s overseas adoption program unexpectedly shuts down. Sometimes adoptions don’t go as planned. Adoptive Families’ recent survey revealed that in 2008, 29 percent of people adopting domestically and 16 percent of those pursuing international adoption had a false start before adopting successfully. The best way to minimize unwelcome surprises is by being selective and asking for references when choosing an agency or attorney; don’t just decide to take the plunge based on your first Google search.
