6. You have to wait a long time to get a child.
The length of your wait is largely determined by what you’re looking for. At least with domestic adoption, the more flexible you are, the sooner you’re likely to be holding a baby. According to adoption attorney Elizabeth Swire Falker, many adoptive parents rule out birth mothers because of lifestyle (excessive drinking, for example), circumstances (such as a pregnancy resulting from rape), or race (if they do not feel comfortable raising a child who is a different race than their own). With international adoption there’s less opportunity for speeding up the process; the timeline is generally set in stone.
