Q. My husband and I want to start a family. How soon should we see our doctor if we don’t conceive?

A. It really is age-dependent. If you’re under 35 years old, you can wait a year. From 35 to 39, if you aren’t pregnant in six months to a year you should consult a doctor. After age 40 you shouldn’t wait more than six months. These are general guidelines, based on the average time it takes women to conceive at various ages. In the United States, for example, the average 30-year-old having a baby will take three to four months to conceive. As she gets older, that time frame increases.
