Q. Is It Safe for a woman—or a man—who is HIV-positive to have a child?

A. Men who have HIV can impregnate women relatively safely through sperm washing and the ICSI (intracytoplasmic sperm injection) procedure. Women who are HIV-positive can have a healthy baby with treatment during pregnancy and aggressive monitoring of the baby after delivery. (Mothers who are HIV-positive are advised not to breastfeed their babies, as the virus can be passed on through breast milk.) Obviously any pregnancy involving a partner who is HIV-positive should be discussed with a physician ahead of time so that all the necessary steps can be taken before, during, and after the pregnancy to make sure the baby is uninfected and healthy.
