Endometriosis Not a Bar to Babymaking

It’s true that endometriosis is a leading cause of female infertility: 20 to 50 percent of women with infertility problems suffer from the disease, according to studies by the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG).

But endometriosis is not necessarily a bar to babymaking. Roughly 60 to 70 percent of women with the condition have no problem, according to experts at the National Institutes of Health. The determining factor seems to be how and where endometrial tissue lands in the body. Fertility is more likely to be affected if the reproductive organs are positioned badly or distorted from scarring. Endometriosis can also hamper fertility by interfering with egg development, causing scarring that can block the egg’s travel to the womb, or making the uterus less receptive to implantation.
