Boxers or Briefs

Q. Should I have my husband switch from “tighty-whiteys” to boxers while we’re trying to conceive?

A. Boxers aren’t really necessary, but what we would advise against is any kind of clothing or activity that heats up the testicles a lot. As far as undergarments go, tight-fitting nylon underwear that doesn’t allow heat to escape from the groin area wouldn’t be a good idea. But cotton underwear, whether briefs or boxers, should be fine.

Of more concern than underwear are activities or lifestyles that keep the groin area heated for long periods of time. For instance, policemen, taxi drivers, and truckers who sit in one spot for hours on end might want to get out of their vehicles once in a while to “air it out.” That’s a simple change that could make a difference.

Similarly, men who take long soaks in a hot tub, or bicycle for hours in tight exercise shorts, might want to rethink their activities if they’re having trouble conceiving.
