Physical affection has been shown to increase your body’s levels of oxytocin, a hormone that reduces stress. But it’s not all about sex. “Just putting your arm around someone or rubbing their shoulders—things that produce skin-to-skin contact—has that effect,” says Floyd. One recent study found that the more physical contact couples had, even if it was just touching hands, the lower their levels of the stress hormone cortisol. Just cuddling on the couch can make the daily grind melt away.
